On August 21, 2017, students in CUSD 10 witnessed the historic solar eclipse that passed through our community. They donned special eclipse glasses, learned about the science taking place and had fun eclipse celebrations.
Collinsville High School staff Tom Withee, TaRael Kee, Carla Elliff and Rachael Gattuso accompanied 118 CHS students on a field trip to witness totality while observing and conducting science experiments. Besides viewing glasses, they utilized activities and devices recommended by NASA to view the solar eclipse — such as a telescope/projector.
Many classes in the district watched a live video feed from NASA — including those with students too young or not able to view the eclipse outdoors. Teachers incorporated special lessons and projects into curriculum for the day. Several schools had themed snacks — such as Moon Pies and Sun Chips. Younger students made masks or wore hats to help keep them safe while viewing the eclipse through their special glasses.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Green said, “It was a great day for the students in our district. They were in school learning about the solar eclipse and safely viewing it. It’s a memory to last a lifetime.”
