Winning yearbook design announced
Collinsville Middle School has announced the winners of its annual yearbook design contest. Students Sean Hunt, Ryan Vandenbossche, Reyna Skeel and Alexa Burns won this year’s contest. The cover’s theme is “Building Dreams.” The winner received yearbook staff shirts and free yearbooks as prizes. Burns also won last year.
Collinsville to make improvements with $50,000 grant
The Collinsville School District will make the following improvements as a result of a $50,000 grant from the state of Illinois according to Superintendent Bob Green:
New sidewalks at Collinsville High School and Caseyville Elementary School
Repaired playground surfaces at Dorris Intermediate School and Renfro Elementary School
Replacement lighting in the auto body and wood shop rooms at Collinsville Area Vocational School
The district was among five Madison County school districts to each receive a $50,000 grant from the state. The other districts are Alton, Bethalto, East Alton-Wood River and Roxana. The grants are for maintenance and repair of school buildings.
Student completes internship
Alexis Palumbo, of Collinsville, recently completed an internship at the Jacksonville Developmental Center in Jacksonville, Ill. as part of the Illinois College Explorers program. The program is a partnership between Illinois College and the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Palumbo is a graduate of Collinsville High School.
Scholarship opportunity announced
The Troy VFW Post 976 and Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring a patriotic scholarship contest for junior high and high school students. Interested students may drop off or mail entries to the Troy VFW at 123 W. Market St., Troy, IL, 62294. Prizes and monetary assistance will be awarded in each contest. The contest details are:
Grades 6-8 “Patriot’s Pen” theme is “What I would tell America’s founding fathers?” 300-400 word essays. Students can enter by submitting the entry form and essay to their local VFW post.
Grades 9-12 “Voices of Democracy” them is “Is our Constitution still relevant?” This contest involves a three to five minute audio-essay. Entry forms, and the essay and recording can be turned into the Troy VFW Post 976.
All entries due by Nov. 1.
Prizes awarded for first, second and third place entries in each contest.
