CMS Parents/Guardians,
Each year, schools are required by Illinois School Code to practice a number of safety drills. This includes fire drills, bus drills and other drills to prepare students and staff in the case of emergency.
On Monday, October 29, Collinsville Middle School will be conducting a mandatory lockdown drill.
Some emergency drills, such as fire drills, are designed to protect children and adults from a potential emergency by practicing how to exit the building in a pre-planned and organized manner. During a lockdown drill, we practice what to do to stay safe inside the building for situations when it is safer to remain there.
During a lockdown practice drill, a statement is made over the speaker system announcing the beginning of the drill. Students and staff clear the halls and silently secure themselves in a safe place until the drill is complete.
Safety drills are used to keep everyone safe in case there is danger in our school. We want students and staff to be prepared for the worst and to automatically and calmly know what to do.
We know students and adults experience anxiousness over potential dangers we face in today’s society. Lockdown drills, and the reasons for them, can generate anxiety. We understand the thoughts and concerns these moments may create.
We are sharing this information so you can take a moment to have a conversation with your child about this upcoming drill. Do not hesitate to reach out should you need more support in addressing their questions.

Feeling safe comes from knowing there is a solid plan in place to deal with danger. Please know CMS works closely with local police and firefighters to make sure we are prepared for emergencies. Participating in safety drills helps everyone feel empowered to deal with scary situations that could arise.
As always, thank you for your support.
Respectfully,
Dr. Jackson
