Collinsville Middle School’s Advanced Health Class organized a Spring 2019 fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society The result was around $2,500 raised to fight cancer — and four clean-shaven teachers.
What started with an ambitious goal by Mrs. Wolff and her class to raise $1,000 to support blood cancer research, resulted in $2,495 (with donations continuing as the school year ended).
The original idea was to have a “Penny War” between classes and collect donations during lunch periods and from parents during drop-off and pick-up. To provide an added incentive for donations, students collaborated and came up with the idea to get teaches with beards to shave them.
“As teachers with beards who value them,” said CMS Library Media Specialist Mr. Hayman, “$1,000 was not enough. If we were going to shave, students and classrooms would need to step up to the plate and donate more for this great cause.”
Four hairy-faced teachers graciously accepted the challenge of shaving their beards if the students succeeded by collecting certain monetary goals:
$1,250 – Mr. Muniz to be shaved by Mattox Greer
$1,500 – Mr. Hayman to be shaved by Izabelle Koentz
$1,750 – Mr. Pape to be shaved by Mr. Hulliung
$2,000 – Mr. Haerr to be shaved by Sports Clips Collinsville (a beard like his needed a professional!)
The students far exceeded their goal by raising nearly $2,500 – so the shaving was scheduled for the final day of the 2018-19 school year. The momentous occasion was accompanied by the song “Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye” blaring on the gymnasium speakers.
Top classroom collectors:
Mrs. Hendricks $361
Mrs. Larson/Mr. Strickland $189
Mrs. Alexander/Mrs. Rebroyas $127
Mr. Muniz $124
