April 2023 – Collinsville High School student council has been recognized as a 2023 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council (NatStuCo).
The National Council of Excellence is a national award program created by NatStuCo to recognize student councils that maintain strong year-round programs and work to improve their schools and communities through their leadership activities.
“Only student councils that are very active on the local, district, state and national levels can achieve this award and Collinsville High School is thrilled to be one of them again this year,” said CHS StuCo advisor Kyle Gordon.
The award is founded on the four tenets of NatStuCo (Leadership, Service, Engagement and Student Voice) and provides broad recognition for worthy efforts of NatStuCo member councils.
NatStuCo wrote: “On behalf of National Student Council, it is our pleasure to recognize the Collinsville High School Student Council as a 2023 National Gold Council of Excellence. Winning the National Gold Council of Excellence Award is testament to the highest standards of quality that your council consistently demonstrates in its operation, and its projects and activities. NatStuCo Gold Councils of Excellence are the models of quality for which other student councils should strive to become.”
This marks the 18th consecutive year CHS StuCo has received the designation.
“There are approximately 15 schools in the entire nation that have been a Gold Council of Excellence every year since the award was created in 2006. Collinsville High School is proud to be one of them,” added Kyle Gordon.
The NatStuCo program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
“Exceptional student councils are a hallmark of exceptional schools,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The Collinsville High School council has taken student leadership to the next level, creating a culture promoting scholarship and citizenship that resonates far beyond their team. I’m delighted to recognize their hard work with the National Gold Council of Excellence Award for their commitment to service, leadership and uplifting the voices of their peers.”
A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. Only six Illinois student councils were recognized as 2023 National Councils of Excellence: Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Central A & M High School, Collinsville High School, Marion High School, New Trier High School Winnetka and St. Charles North High School.
Collinsville StuCo is well-known and respected on the state and national levels. This summer, Collinsville High School will host the 2023 Vision National Student Leadership Conference.
