All CHS sophomore’s are invited to attend the 1st Annual Metro East Teen Driver Safety Day event on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the Gateway Center in Collinsville.
The Collinsville-Maryville-Caseyville Rotary Club has generously offered to host the entire sophomore class at this special event. Anyone designated Grade 10 in the Skyward Student Information System is invited to take part in this worthwhile safety initiative.
Any sophomore parent who does not want a student to participate should contact the main office: 346-6320.
The event will last the entire school day on Tuesday, October 16th. Students will be dismissed from their 1st hour class and return at the end of the school day.
“The Collinsville Police Department, Illinois State Police, and numerous other businesses have partnered with CMC Rotary to make this beneficial safety activity a reality for our students,” said CHS Principal David Snider.
Metro East Teen Driver Safety Day is designed to supplement and reinforce classroom and behind-the-wheel Driver’s Education instruction. It uses presentations and active participation to deliver important safe-driving information to the students. Each day is structured like a regular school day. The students are divided into multiple groups and rotate through the presentations. Lunch is provided.
Students are exposed to seven different safe-driving presentations and activities:
- Street Smart: This 80-minute presentation is presented by S.A.F.E. (Stay Alive From Education), a group of firefighter/paramedics from Miami-Dade County, Florida. They teach the hazards of alcohol and drugs, impaired and distracted driving, excessive speed and the importance of seat belt use.
- Work Zone Safety: A 20-minute presentation given by the Illinois Department of Transportation covers the hazards and risks of driving through road construction and work zones.
- Motorcycle Awareness: The Illinois State Police Motorcycle Enforcement Bureau presents information from a motorcyclist’s perspective on what drivers should be aware of while driving near motorcycles. This is a 20-minute presentation.
- No Zone Semi Display: This is a 40-minute session on the hazards of vehicle blind spots with active participation of the students. Students have the opportunity to sit in driver’s seats of semi-trucks and passenger cars that have cars and motorcycles parked in the blind spots.
- Seat Belt Convincer & Roll-Over Simulator: This 40-minute presentation by the Illinois State Police and Collinsville Police Department demonstrates the importance of seat belts to the students.
- Driving Simulation: The Collinsville Police Department and Illinois State Police will use this 40-minute session to demonstrate the dangers of impaired and distracted driving through a series of simulations and hands-on activities.
