For the 2018-19 school year, the Collinsville High School social work team and Principal David Snider began an initiative to reduce stress among the school’s staff. One result is the new “Serenity Station” relaxation room at CHS.
(The room was featured by KMOV-TV St. Louis on February 12, 2019. Click this link to view the story.)
CHS Serenity Station is open for faculty and staff to utilize when they need a quiet space to relax and collect their thoughts for a few minutes during the school day. The rules state “please no food, please no noise and enjoy!” Grading papers is not allowed – quietly reading a book is allowed. The idea is to escape the rigors of the workday for a short time and return rejuvenated and refreshed.
Mr. Snider came up with the idea over the summer of 2018 and approached local businesses to fund creation of the room. He turned to staff members to design and outfit the special space. He thanked those individuals for “their efforts in creating a comfortable place for staff when some quiet relaxation time is needed.”

The room includes comfortable seating, as well as a soft rug and floor pillows, a noise canceling machine, water feature, plants, and a diffuser to emit essential oils. The most popular spot is a massage chair that reclines and provides several minutes of calm relaxation. Lighting is dim – with several small lamps providing an almost candle-like glow.
“I am pleased and proud to recognize the generous donors who support the CHS staff and their commitment to provide the best for our students at Collinsville High School,” said Snider.
