May 18, 2022 – Thirty-seven Collinsville High School (CHS) seniors attained state recognition for excellent performance on the 2022 Illinois Seal of Biliteracy Exam.
The Illinois Seal of Biliteracy recognizes a student’s ability to effectively communicate in both English and a second language. All of these 2022 CHS graduates had a special seal placed on their high school diplomas.
Twenty-four students received the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish this year: Yesenia Torres, Layla Lopez, Melany Varela, Karina Pacheco, Jacqueline Calderon, Yailin Ochoa-Niño, Stephanie Torres, Fabian Delrio, Lesley Lopez, Israel Lopez-Lazaro, Emily Lopez, Crista Rodriguez, Emily Flores, Erick Flores, Narayeli Cardenas, Ayleen Cortez, Jennifer Torres, Bryanna Cardenas, Mazie Gilland, Alice Knoebel, Osiris Banuelos, Zoey Ward, Selena Barboza and Esteban Avila.
Two students achieved the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy for Latin: Aiden Kaufman and Chris Thilman.
Receiving a State Commendation Toward Biliteracy for Spanish were: Seth Verstraete, Maddie Cawvey, Nathan Maczura, Jaivieion Davis, Brinna Shea and Anna Falbe.
Receiving a State Commendation Toward Biliteracy for Latin were: Fabian Delrio, Israel Lopez- Lazaro, Danielle Webb, Tyler Morgan, Megan Houberg, Cecylia Malottki and Molly Halasey.
Two students received awards in both Spanish and Latin: Fabian Delrio and Israel Lopez-Lazaro. They each got the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and the Commendation of Biliteracy in Latin.
“We are beyond proud of these amazing kids. Receiving the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy or a State Commendation Towards Biliteracy is a HUGE accomplishment, especially because these students had an abnormal high school experience due to the pandemic,” said CHS World Language Department Chair Cara Kettler, “These students will be able to use these test scores to receive credit at the college level, and will make themselves even more marketable in the workforce. We couldn’t be more proud of them!”
