On February 23, 2019, the Collinsville High School Math Team placed 2nd overall in Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) regional competition. SIXTEEN* CHS students will advance to state.
According to Coach Bill Gottschalk, “The team came in 2nd behind Carbondale once again, but the difference between our scores was much closer than in years past.”
State Qualifiers:
Freshman: Aidan Kaufman, 2nd place, Algebra 1
Sophomores: Carli Lentz and Alex Stahnke, 3rd place tie; Tyler Boerner, 2nd place, Geometry
Juniors: Zach Roseman and Hunter Juengel, 1st place tie, Algebra 2
Senior: Jimmy Moore, 1st place, Pre-Calculus
The entire sophomore and junior teams advance to state by placing 1st on their team tests.
Seniors Jimmy Moore and James Russell also will advance to state as a result of their 1st place finish in the oral competition. Moore and Russell had to teach themselves the topic of Game Theory and present solutions to questions from SIUE math professors.
The ICTM State Math Contest is Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the University of Illinois.
Important Update (March 5, 2019) — Coach Gottschalk reports: “We initially did not think that our Calculator Team was advancing to state, but we found out today that our score at Regionals was high enough to qualify to participate at the state level. This will add one additional student, senior Eliza Apperson, to the state competition on Saturday, May 4th for a total of 16 student participants. The team consists of seniors Jimmy Moore and Eliza Apperson, junior Evan Cappechi, sophomore Tyler Boerner, and freshman Aidan Kaufman.“
