Collinsville High School had an excellent showing at the February 2019 Illinois Junior Classical League (IJCL) North Convention.
“Students worked hard for this, preparing in advance through multiple student-led meetings, working hard to make unified spirit outfits and devoting their free time to creating elaborate art projects and studying for tests,” said CHS Latin teacher James Stark.
In addition to participating in events, CHS students planned and led sessions for other students.
“Once again, four of our students–Annika Cosgrove, Hannah Herman, Julia Eversmann and Melanie Johnson–led two separate hour-long activity sessions, leading 40 students from throughout Illinois through gameified recreation of Ancient Rome’s Catiline Conspiracy,” said Stark.
According to Stark, 2018 CHS Graduate SJ Nowman (who attended as a Senior Classical League member) helped set up, judge events, supervise students and generally ensure everything at the convention runs smoothly. “This was the first time in the history of the CHS Latin program that a CHS graduate stepped forward to do this,” he said.
Stark was especially proud of the comments he received from teachers at other schools about CHS students: “On two separate occasions, teachers from other schools expressed how grateful they were that CHS students had approached them to offer a helping hand when they were struggling with moving/setting up materials throughout the convention space. No other school got a shout out like this during our meetings. I think that this speaks to the value-driven community that we foster here at CHS.”
