February 2023 – Twenty-five Collinsville High School Latin Club members participated in the Illinois Junior Classical League 2023 North Convention in Chicago.
“This is a record number of attendees for CHS,” said Latin teacher/club sponsor James Stark, “Once again made possible by donations to our Mary Lee Muniz Travel Scholarship Fund, which has allowed students of all economic backgrounds to attend.”
The three-day convention was back to pre-pandemic levels of engagement, featuring over 200 Latin students and guest lecturers ranging from university professors to practicing lawyers.
“Despite the return of notoriously tough competition, we secured fourth place overall for our students’ achievements at convention,” Stark said, “We earned a record number of individual awards, with students earning 51 academic, artistic and performance awards. Last but not least, the entire delegation placed first for school spirit.”
“I am fiercely proud of these students. I received various comments on their enthusiasm, leadership and dependability. They have high hopes to use the experience gained here to revitalize ILJCL’s South Convention later this year, so I hope to have more achievements to report later this spring,” Stark added.
