February 26, 2021 – To wrap up Black History Month activities, the Collinsville High School Black Student Union announced the winners in their month-long classroom door decorating contest.
Twenty-one teachers/rooms/offices participated. Three hundred sixty-six people cast a vote for their favorite door. Teachers responsible for the winning entry received a gift card.
Black Student Union club sponsor Joanna Kelly said, “I would like to thank all the teachers that took the time to decorate their door for Black History Month. Representation matters!”
First Place: Art Department, Mrs. Koester and Ms. Darlin (95 votes)
“The work was a collaboration among all the CHS art students and art teachers. The goal was to not only highlight black artists, but to showcase the power art can hold in both narrating a history and celebrating a culture, but also inspiring the next generation of makers. The story we came up with was a young artist painting a portrait and as her hair and paint splatters behind her it becomes a timeline of black art history, from ancient African sculpture to modern artists such as Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley, finally ending in a black power fist. The students worked hard in this collaboration and enjoyed bridging the two art rooms (Mrs. Koester’s and Ms. Darlin’s) together, in unity for Black History Month.” — Ms. Darlin
Second Place: Room 47, Mrs. Furlow (47 votes)
Third Place: Room 139, Mrs. Parris (39 votes)
