Collinsville High School offers Driver’s Education for students who reside in Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.
If you are under 18 years old, the Illinois Office of the Secretary of State (SOS) requires you to complete an approved driver’s education course before you can obtain your driver’s license.
A complete driver education course includes:
- 30 hours of classroom instruction. A student may miss a maximum of 5 classes, but each class must be made up; if the student misses more than 5 classes, he or she must re-enroll and the entire classroom training repeated.
- minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.
- minimum of 6 hours of in-vehicle observation.
Completing a driver’s education course provides the safe driving skills and knowledge necessary to begin gaining driving experience with a licensed adult and eventually take on the responsibilities of driving alone.
How Driver’s Education Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel Instruction is Scheduled:
CHS students are assigned a course for Driver’s Education classroom instruction based on birthdate.
After passing the driver’s permit test and obtaining an instruction permit (see Permit Phase below) AND driving at least 30 hours with parents, the student can request behind-the-wheel instruction.
Once a student has met the requirements, the parent/guardian can request behind-the-wheel instruction via email at [email protected]. Please include the student’s FULL NAME and BIRTHDATE. You may also indicate a preference for behind-the-wheel training times/days.
Behind-the-wheel training takes place before school (6:15 am – 7:45 am) or after school (3:00 pm- 4:30 pm) on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday; there are limited sessions available during school day lunch periods and on Saturdays. Check with the Driver’s Education department via email. Students are required to complete 8 sessions (12 hours).
The CHS Driver’s Education behind-the-wheel fee is $250.
When the behind-the-wheel request email is received, the course will be entered into Skyward Family Access. Once the request has been processed and added to Skyward, the parent/guardian can pay the fee online using debit, credit or e-transfer.
To pay the Driver’s Education fee:
- Log into Skyward Family Access (Note you must access Skyward using a web browser, the Skyward App does not include Fee Management. Remember, you can also access Skyward via the icon on our homepage.)
