Since graduating with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, I have worked my entire career as a school-based Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). My role is to combine communication goals with academic and social goals by integrating classroom objectives, helping students understand basic language concepts, supporting reading and writing, and increasing students’ understanding of texts and lessons in the classroom. A speech/language disorder negatively effecting academic success can be in the area(s) of articulation, language, voice, and/or fluency (stuttering). Speech services in the school setting can vary depending on a students’ needs. Some students only require collaboration and consultation between the SLP and the classroom teacher so that communication needs are addressed by the teacher. Other students need classroom-based services as the SLP enforces communication goals within the classroom while others need more intensive, direct pull-out services with a small group in the speech classroom. It is important to be aware of the signs of a communication disorder so that you can contact your child’s classroom teacher to begin a speech/language referral should you have concerns:
•Late talker
•Below expectations in classroom
•Difficulty learning to read and write
•Unable to express thoughts and ideas
•Problems understanding others and following directions
•Doesn’t get along with others
•Problems taking tests
