What are we learning?
*Reading- This week students will be able to ask and answer questions about an informational text as a pre-reading strategy in order to activate schema, make meaning, and increase comprehension. We will also be working to connect information in an informational text in order to state the main topic. Lastly, we will identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic in order to increase comprehension. We will be looking at the book Living and Nonliving in order to work with these standards.
*Letterland- This week we will we will finish learning the letter L and learn about the letter F (Firefighter Fred). We will focus on the sound one day and writing the letter the next day. We will continue to segment words to listen for the sounds that we hear in the beginning, middle and end of a word. In addition, we will continue blend sounds together to read words. Practice our new sound spellings at home with your child! Please practice Nonsense words at home too with the sheets provided! This will help you to see how your child is doing with their reading skills!
*Math- This week we will begin Unit 5 which begins our unit on addition. If your child has a strong number sense they will be more successful with addition, so this is our hope at this point in the year!
We will begin by learning strategies to help us add. This week we will learn to count objects, use our fingers, and draw a picture in order to help us with addition.
*Science – We are starting our new until called Is it Alive? We will be looking at characteristics of animals that make them alike and different from other animals and from nonliving things.
