• Our First Quarter
Students are expected to pass a Print Concepts and Reading Behaviors assessment upon entering kindergarten.  Listed below are the concepts they should know and be able to show an understanding of within the first few days of school.  Please help your child be successful by working with them on the following skills:

Print Concepts:  (I understand how print works)
    • A book has a front and back
    • I know where the story begins (first page of story)
    • I can point to the words on the page (words are different than pictures)
    • I can point to each word as someone reads the text (words are separated by spaces)
    • I know a period means "end of the sentence" or "stop"
    • I can point to the first and last part of a sentence
    • I can point to the first and last letter in a word
    • I know the difference between a letter and words
    • I know the difference between capital and lower case letters

Reading Behaviors: (I can act like a reader)

During this assessments students are introduced to a text that repeats itself across the pages.  After hearing the first few pages read the student should be able to mimic the reader and 'read' the rest of the book by using picture clues and repeating the text across the pages.
    • I can point to the title of a book
    • I can point to the words as I 'read' them
    • I can maintain the pattern in the text as a 'read' across the pages
    • I can use pictures clues to help me read the text and know the changing part of each sentence
    • I can track the print from left to right and top to bottom
    • I know to turn the page to keep reading

    Math Skills:

    • I can count a row of objects by touching and counting each one in sequence
    • I can rote count to 15 or beyond
    • I can name shapes and colors
    • I know the difference between letters and numbers
    • I can identify numbers 0-5
    Writing Skill:
    • I know how to hold a pencil
    • I can use scissors
    • I can write most capital letters legibly
    • I can write my first name independently
