Welcome to Speech
I am one of the Speech/Language Pathologists for North Bay Elementary. This is my 19th year working as a school-based SLP. I have been with Biloxi Public Schools for 9 years. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and my Master’s Degree from the University of South Alabama. I work with students to help them progress in their speech and language goals and increase communication skills in the classroom among their teachers and peers. I am the mother of 4 wonderful children and married to my husband of 20 years. We are lifelong natives of Biloxi. We also have three dogs, a fish, and 2 guinea pigs that we call family. I enjoy working with my awesome students and want to wish them all an amazing school year.
What does a Speech/Language Pathologist do?
As a professional in the schools, we address the following:
An articulation disorder is the atypical production of speech sounds characterized by substitutions, omissions, additions or distortions that may interfere with intelligibility. (ASHA.org)
A fluency disorder is an interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and repetitions in sounds, syllables, words, and phrases. This may be accompanied by excessive tension, struggle behavior, and secondary mannerisms. (ASHA.org)
A voice disorder is characterized by the abnormal production and/or absences of vocal quality, pitch, loudness, resonance, and/or duration, which is inappropriate for an individual's age and/or gender. (ASHA.org)
A language disorder is impaired comprehension and/or use of spoken, written and/or other symbol systems. The disorder may involve (1) the form of language (phonology, morphology, syntax), (2) the content of language (semantics), and/or (3) the function of language in communication (pragmatics) in any combination. (ASHA.org)
