After 23 years in a successful career as a cosmetologist, I decided to retire my shears and go back to school to become a teacher of mathematics. This major life decision was greatly influenced by my husband and one of my customers, Sara Hughes, the drama teacher at my alma mater La Sierra High School. With the love and support of my family, I was able to graduate Magna Cum Laude from California Baptist College.

Why do I Teach?

As a 6th grader attending Orrenmaa Elementary School, I tested at a 4th grade level in math. With the help from my awesome teacher, Mr. Bice, and long arduous tearful tutoring sessions with my father, I experienced the legendary “ah-ha” moment. Math, a once despised and intimidating ordeal, was now my favorite subject. My self-efficacy became infinite. By the end of the school year, I was completing 8th grade level material. I know what it is like to struggle with difficult concepts pertaining to math. Consequently, I can relate to the frustrations many students face when learning and applying new mathematical concepts. I know, from personal experience, that perseverance and hard work are all students need to master the rigors of common core mathematics. Therefore, my philosophy is that every student can achieve beyond what they believe they are capable, even in the often dreaded subject of math. My love for math and ability to relate to students of all ages is why I am now realizing a rewarding career as a 7th grade math teacher at Arizona Middle School. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to give back to my childhood community.
