Third graders in Mrs. Ripps’ class at Veeder Elementary School had the opportunity to move around the room in small groups, looking at different measuring tools. The children had to work together to guess how each tool was used and what it was measuring. Such tools as a microscope, magnifying glass, wind gauge, thermometer, rulers in inches and centimeters, measuring tape, calculator, balance, scale, graduated cylinder and liquid measurement containers were available. The collection of data at each station was necessary and a discussion followed, using words such as hypothesis, infer, experiment, investigation, observation and variable.
