The South Colonie Central School District recently received a donation from Stewart’s Shops in support of the district’s backpack program.
During the school year, South Colonie Central School District provides backpacks filled with food to help meet the needs of hungry students on weekends, when other resources may not be available.
This year, Stewart’s Shops made a $900 donation in support of the program through the distribution of egg and milk cards.
“Our weekend backpack program is more important than ever,” said South Colonie Supervisor of Special Programs William Boardman. “In addition to the on-going economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of inflation has hit our families hard. The egg and milk card donation from Stewarts will allow us to include that in the backpacks so that families have access to those necessary items.”
The South Colonie backpack program supported by local churches and businesses. The goal of the program is to provide children with additional nutritious food, as a supplement to what they receive during the course of the week through the school breakfast and lunch programs.
“We rely on community partners like Stewart’s Shops to help us with donations,” Boardman added. “Our families certainly appreciate the ability to participate when they are in a time of need and to be able to provide for those families is extremely important.”
