South Colonie to host football field naming ceremony in honor of beloved coach and teacher

Last year, the South Colonie Board of Education received a request to memorialize the varsity football field in honor of South Colonie beloved coach and teacher the late Michael Ambrosio. In March of 2020, per board policy, the Board opened up public comment for 30 days via an online survey receiving nearly 2000 responses with an overwhelming majority in favor of the recognition. South Colonie is set to host the field naming ceremony on Friday, Sept. 17 at 5:15 p.m. prior to the first home game of the season.

“Coach Ambrosio was everything that coaches ask their own players to be. He led by example,” said South Colonie Athletic Director William Roemer.  “He was selfless, hard-working, respectful, and the ultimate team player.  Dedicating the field in his honor, will not only remind us of his contributions to South Colonie Athletics but now our future generation of athletes will forever feel connected to the games and memories shared on Ambrosio Field.

Coach Michael Ambrosio served as a physical education teacher from 1985-2017 in the South Colonie Central School District. Coach Ambrosio supported all athletic programs and coached wrestling, track, lacrosse, and most notably football.

Coach Ambrosio coached football for 33 years at all levels and held the head varsity coaching position at Colonie from 1997-2011.  He led his teams to three Superbowl finals three times and won 12 of the 14 Colonie Cups as the head coach.

Coach Ambrosio was widely respected by his coaching peers for his integrity and genuine competitive spirit.

The ceremony will be held at the archway entrance to the field.  Attendees are encouraged to follow COVID-19 protocols.
