South Colonie School District announced in June a new DEI coordinator for the 2023-24 school year. April, ENL (English as a New Language) teacher at Sand Creek Middle School will support the district in this new role for the 2023-24 school year.
“April brings a wealth of experience, passion and expertise to this crucial role,” said Dr. David Perry superintendent of schools. “With her dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment, she will lead our district’s efforts in promoting diversity, understanding, and cultural awareness among students, staff, and the entire South Colonie school community.”
As an ENL teacher at Sand Creek Middle School, April has already demonstrated her commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds while ensuring their academic success. Her deep understanding of the unique needs and experiences of our diverse student population will be invaluable in advancing the district’s DEI initiatives.
“From the time I was hired in South Colonie in 2004, I have sought opportunities to both give students opportunities to celebrate their own cultural and linguistic heritage as well as facilitate experiences that allow students, staff and families to learn about others,” said Mlambi. “Taking students abroad, advising the Human Relations Club in my early years in the district and hosting family potlucks with our English language learners and their families which grew into the districtwide Multicultural Festival in more recent years, are all outgrowths of this desire to celebrate our diversity.”
In addition to her work in the classroom, Mlambi has been recognized as a mentor and trainer among her fellow educators. She conducts workshops and professional development sessions, sharing her knowledge and best practices in ENL instruction. Additionally, she has been actively involved in programs that promote engagement among families. She collaborates with parents, local organizations, and community leaders to create a supportive learning environment for English language learners. With a deep understanding of various cultures, she promotes mutual understanding and inclusivity, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
“I am so humbled and appreciative of this opportunity to contribute to my school community by leading our committee to continue the important work of affirming the multiple expressions of diversity within our school community,” she said. “ I look forward to promoting more professional development to cultivate and sustain our understanding of culturally responsive educational practices that will enable all students to thrive in South Colonie”
Mlambi will work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents and community stakeholders to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to promote inclusivity.
