Four Sand Creek Middle School students (Dylan Morehouse, Ryan Seestadt, Div Pramanick and Stephen Pham) participated in the KidWind National Competition in Chicago.
The team, the SC Winders, qualified for Nationals by finishing first at the Regional Competition held at General Electric Co. in March. Under the direction of their Coach Jim Brown, the team from Sand Creek did an outstanding job at nationals competing against more than 30 teams from all over the country.
The KidWind Competition is comprised of two levels of competition, the high school division and the middle school division. This year, KidWind Nationals were conducted in conjunction with the Collegiate Wind Challenge. As a result, the Sand Creek team was paired with members of the collegiate team from Iowa State University to complete in an ‘instant challenge’ on the last day of the competition. Members of both teams learned a great deal as a result of this challenge.
In addition, Giovan Scialdone (Colonie Central High School Class of 2001), President of the 3S Lift Company, also worked with members of the Sand Creek KidWind team to demonstrate the latest technology in Wind Energy Maintenance and Repair.
The National Wind Power Challenges, both KidWind and the Collegiate Wind Challenge, were held as part of the American Wind Energy Association‘s (AWEA) National Convention. Representatives from all over the world were in Chicago to display the latest technology and innovations associated with Wind Energy. The Sand Creek students spent a portion of their time speaking with industry representatives about the future of wind and other forms of Renewable Energy.
