Sand Creek Students Use Telemetry to Find Tortoises

Students in Stacey Sebert’s and James Brown’s classes at Sand Creek Middle School worked together using telemetry to find radio tagged tortoises. The students were afforded the opportunity because their teachers participated in a conservation science workshop last summer at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The San Diego Zoo has telemetry kits they ship to teachers throughout the year so students can learn how the zoo tracks creatures in the wild to make sure they are healthy and in a safe habitat. Telemetry uses sound waves to aid in finding the tagged tortoises. Students really enjoyed the activity and were able to sign the San Diego Zoo yearbook after taking part in the activity. Photos were sent to the zoo so be on the lookout for some familiar faces on the zoo’s webpage.
