Colonie Central student is a ‘cut’ above the rest; will compete at state competition

A Colonie Central High School student hopes to be a cut above the rest – literally – during a statewide competition later this month.

Cody Walter is one of 36 career and technical school students from a dozen area high schools who will represent Capital Region BOCES when they compete at the New York State SkillsUSA competition in Syracuse April 27-29.

The students, who hail from districts as diverse as Sharon Springs and Shenendehowa, Bethlehem and Schoharie, will compete in events that showcase their work-related skills.

An aspiring carpenter, Walter is a Construction/Heavy Equipment student in the Career and Technical School and will compete in the construction competition. During the event, he will have a certain period of time to build a small shed-like structure, complete with a window, door and trusses.

“I love competition. I absolutely love the energy it brings me. I want to see how far I can get,” Walter said during a break in practicing his skills with retired Career and Technical School teacher Bill Rouleau.
