Fourth graders from Eisenhower, Horace Mann, James, and Wilson attended the 8th Annual Tech Fair on Friday, March 25 at the Advanced Technology Center on the Indian Hills Community College campus. Liberty students are scheduled to attend on Friday, April 22.

Sponsored by Ottumwa Schools and Indian Hills Community College, this learning opportunity is provided to encourage the use of technology. Students are able to share a technology project with their peers and experience how technology can be used at school, in everyday life, and for future careers. Students also had the opportunity to attend three sessions that were led by IHCC staff and district media specialists. Sessions included:

  • Transportation Technology - Students experienced the different technologies used for planes, trains, and automobiles and learned how they all work to move you from point A to point B.
  • Machine Technology – Students learned how to make simple machines with Legos and see how simple machines create complex machines that can be used to make our lives easier.
  • Electronics and Robots – Students learned to construct basic electrical circuits and how robots do tasks for people that are boring or dangerous.
  • Interactive Media - Students learned how to add artistic effects to photos just like the professionals through a fun, hands-on demonstration using the latest editing software.
  • Rule Your Room - A STEM activity encouraged experimenting, tinkering, building, observing, and problem solving to create.
  • Airplane Modeling & Welding Simulator - Students learned to be a virtual pilot through the construction of paper planes and copters and watch the magic of welding by strapping on the helmet and seeing virtual sparks fly.
  • Great Catapult Challenge - Students built their own catapult and participated in the Great Catapult Challenge. How far can you send a marshmallow soaring through the air?
