Jerry Miller will be the guest speaker at this year’s event. Miller grew up in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School. His military career spans 23 years. He spent three years in the Army, eight months in the Iowa Reserves, and 20 years in the Iowa National Guard.
When in the Army, Miller’s battalion was one of four stationed in South Korea, twenty miles south of the DMZ (demilitarized zone where North and South Korea share a border).
After leaving the Army, Miller spent twenty years in the Iowa National guard working in the munitions department. During that time, he was deployed to Kuwait, Turkey, and Qatar. While serving in Qatar, he provided air support for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Miller vividly remembers the intense heat of the desert.
Miller’s last deployment was in the Iowa Air National Guard to Hawaii. Because of his 20 years of service, he had the chance to fly in an F16! Miller will never forget that experience. He retired from the Iowa Air National Guard in July 2006 and currently serves is the associate principal at Evans Middle School.
