180 Days - Volunteers Work on Reading Skills

Five future educators from OHS were helping students at Wilson Elementary with their reading on Tuesday.

Reading Buddies, a United Way program to support reading in Ottumwa, kicked off at Wilson Elementary. Students and their reading buddies will meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school and read together in the school library.

The activity will help prepare the high school students for their future profession. The students, all members of the OHS Future Educators of America club, plan to pursue a degree in education. United Way also provided training on different strategies to use to help students improve their reading skills.

According to United Way Volunteer Coordinator, Ali Wilson, the program is modeled after programs being implemented throughout Iowa. Reading Buddies include:  Ashlyn Zook, Zulema Argueta, Diana Pallares, Lizbeth Rodriguez, and Esther Emberton.
