Schools Receive Fresh Fruit & Vegetables Grant

Three Ottumwa elementary schools, James, Liberty and Wilson Elementary Schools, have been selected to participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2016-17 school year. There were 131 applications state-wide, which is the highest amount since the grant program started. The program is a federally-assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in participating elementary schools during the school day. The goal is to improve children's overall diet and create healthier eating habits to impact their present and future health. The program provides fresh fruit and vegetables to students to be consumed at school but not to be part of the breakfast or lunch program. The program will begin after Labor Day.
