Family Input Creates Successful Event

Wilson Elementary hosted its Literacy Night October 13. Due to parent feedback, the event was combined with the Wilson Buffet where families donated their favorite dishes. The event was coordinated by the PTA and Parent Outreach Coordinator, Alba Anderson. The event was a fundraiser for the Wilson PTA. This event allowed more parents to engage in a different setting with teachers and staff. The grades were divided into two groups so that one group would eat and then go to their kid's classroom and then the second group got to meet with the teacher and then eat. The fundraiser raised $489!! More importantly, the parents really got involved in school in a way that they culturally are used to and enjoy. An interpreter was also available in every classroom. Both teachers and parents commented several times that we should do this every month.

"The response was amazing," said Anderson. "Parents knew it was their idea and had ownership in it."
