Students Toured State Capitol in May

students at the capitol

James fourth graders had the pleasure of visiting our state capitol on May 5. We learned the capitol was built in 1871. There weren’t any screens on the windows so birds flew around in the capitol at free will. We went into the Supreme Court and saw where all 12 justices sit. We visited the library and learned it has more than 100,000 books some of which are delivered to the top level with a dumb waiter! We saw a model of the USS Iowa and learned if we visited it in California, we could see it for free because we are from Iowa. We saw a doll collection representing every Iowa First Lady and one representing the First Gentleman of Iowa governors.

The students favorite part was traveling up into the dome. At the height of 275 feet, it was a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of our students. The students were interested and engaged in every aspect of the tour and our guides were excellent in sharing many different facts about our state capitol.
