James and Liberty students, with the help of community volunteers, planted approximately 175 tree saplings on Wednesday, November 10. Saplings were planted in new tree nurseries, which were recently constructed at each school.
The project is a collaboration between the Friends of Ottumwa’s Parks Foundation, Ottumwa Community Schools, and the City of Ottumwa. Tree nurseries were being established at each of these schools with support from the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation. The nurseries offer the opportunity for students at each location to learn about caring for trees, their environment, the value of volunteerism, and being a good steward to their community. As the trees mature, they will be transplanted to various parks and schools in the community to replace aged or damaged trees, and beautify the community.
