After three consecutive wins, James again finished as the top team in the 2021 Bulldog Book Bowl. Team members included Desmond Abongwa, Oscar Garcia, Kati Paton, Josie Salazar, Abrielle Wiley, and Guadalupe Yanes. Team sponsors were Julie Schuck and Allison Adams.
The Bulldog Book Bowl was created 19 years ago by teacher librarian, Connie Simmons, who was seeking a way to get more students reading the Iowa Children's Choice Award books. Today, the goals are to promote quality literature, develop reading comprehension, recognize academic excellence, and foster a love of reading.
This year, students read eight books, including One Amazing Elephant, Wishtree, Restart, The Wild Robot, The Perfect Score, Louisiana's Way Home, Saving Winslow, and Bob.
Three students were also named master quizzers during the final round. These students answered five questions correctly in one round. Master quizzers were: Joseph Naumann, Horace Mann; and Desmond Abongwa and Abrielle Wiley, James.
Horace Mann earned second place in the event. Team members included: Harper Bradley, Kenlee Crosser, Makayla Dowd, Joseph Naumann, McKenna Ryan, and Finley Zuithoff. Team sponsors were Courtney Brown and Ann Weilbrenner.
