James Elementary fifth graders are ready to cheer for their favorite team during Friday’s Homecoming game.
Every fifth grade student will have the opportunity to attend the game for free. This James tradition was started three years ago by Principal Jay Green. Students and their teachers will spend the evening together cheering for the Bulldogs. And the trip is funded by the school.
Students in Julie Schuck’s class are excited. One boy asked how many days and hours before they go, she shared. It also gives them a sense of independence, attending the game without their parents. “The opportunity builds community,” said Schuck.
For many students, this will be their first trip to a live football game and to Schafer Stadium. The group will wear matching Homecoming shirts and eat pizza at school prior to boarding a bus to the stadium.
The experience will also provide lessons about the game of football. Several students mentioned they know nothing about the game while others participate in Ottumwa’s youth football program.
“My cousin might play,” said Ashley.
“It will be really fun to go with the entire class,” said Aleah, Renton, and Isaac.
And the best part, “staying up until 10 p.m.,” said Erinne. “That is exciting!”
