Third graders at James Elementary School wear many different hats when they are writing, including the one of a critic. One particular assignment was to do a book review on the book, "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo, that their teacher had been reading aloud to them. The criteria was tough. The expectations were high. They had to respond to the text by: making connections, relating to characters, and providing evidence. As expected, every one of them exceeded their teachers’ expectations. They did this writing piece so well that their teachers decided that they needed to be published! So, publish them they did. They found a website called the Spaghetti Book Club which is a safe site that publishes book reviews by kids. It not only includes their review, but also their artwork showing how they chose to represent the book, as well as a self portrait. Now, let’s just say, they just might be famous…
