Teaching Fire Safety

The Ottumwa Fire Department will visit several schools in Ottumwa this week to promote fire safety. Using the Fire Safety Training Trailer, local firemen are visiting each elementary school and Evans Middle School to talk about safety at home and how to exit a burning building.

Students in grades K, 2, and 6 spent approximately 20 minutes going over the safety information. Home safety includes information about smoke detectors, and being careful while cooking, burning candles, etc. The other portion talks about how to get out of the house if it is on fire. Information includes staying low to the ground, feeling doors to see if they are hot, and exiting through a window.

Several fire fighters were on hand to assist at Horace Mann on Monday.
