Kindergarten students in Mrs. Owen's class read about a baby gorilla that was born at the San Diego Zoo on March 12 after an emergency C-section. The baby had a collapsed lung and developed pneumonia. The class decided to send get well cards to the zoo. Students created unique designs on the front of each card and wrote, "get well soon" inside.
This week, the class received a card from the gorilla zoo keepers, who each wrote something on the card. They also sent hand prints from the baby and pictures, including the mother gorilla, Imani, holding a student card. "The mother gorilla looked at our cards," said Christian.
"We were so excited!" said Mrs. Owens.
Students, including Peyton, were happy when the card arrived.
Fun facts the students learned about gorillas included: "Gorillas don't have much fur when born," said Maleah. Belin learned that gorillas are nice. "I thought they were always mean," she said.
Students, including Jonathon, are now brainstorming names for the baby gorilla.
