Little Free Library Unveiled on Tuesday

Horace Mann now has a Little Free Library located in their front yard. The official unveiling will take place on Tuesday, September 16 at 3 p.m.

The Little Free Library concept is a simple one: No cards, no fines, no set hours, just books to share and enjoy! Take a look at the children’s and young adult books in the library. Take one home and enjoy the story. When you are done, return the book or return another book that you have also enjoyed.

The Ottumwa project started with a teacher’s passion for reading and providing convenient access to books for students.  Tracey Cormeny, a third grade teacher at James Elementary, researched the project and felt it was a good fit for James. Other schools also expressed an interest. After working with a building trades class at Ottumwa High School, four libraries were built. By the end of this school year, Ottumwa Schools will have four libraries at various elementary schools, including James, Eisenhower, and Liberty.

The Little Free Library not only promotes reading but also a sense of community and a positive quality of life for Ottumwa. The community is encouraged to advantage of this wonderful opportunity to promote reading with your children. All books will be appropriate for elementary-aged children.

Little Free Library is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization whose mission is to promote a sense of community, reading for children, literacy for adults and libraries around the world. To learn more about Little Free Libraries visit the website at littlefreelibrary.org
