"We are helping the community," said Makayla Brown, a fifth grade student at Eisenhower Elementary.
Fifth grade students spent time Thursday morning filling gallon-sized zip lock bags. The bags will be donated to Blessings Soup Kitchen next week. Blessings will then distribute them to those in need. The project helps "people who are homeless get supplies," said Lauren Cain.
This is the fifth year for the project, according to Jenny Van Nest, a fifth grade teacher. Items are donated by students, by community members, or purchased with funds raised at the school's fall festival. Items are lined up on tables and the students then walk along and fill their bag. Bag contents can include hand wipes, socks, lip balm, snack items, and toothbrushes with paste.
"Its getting colder outside and people are focused on their families for the holidays but it is about the less fortunate too," said Meika Sloan.
Principal Warnecke is proud of the efforts her students demonstrate throughout the year to make a positive impact on the community. "When asked, students always generate ideas to help others."
