Sandi Wilson
Sandi Wilson, an Ottumwa elementary art teacher, will display her own works of art at the Indian Hills Community College Art Gallery through October 27 during regular gallery hours. A reception for Wilson will be held on Thursday, September 15 from 7-8:30 p.m.
Wilson has taught art in Ottumwa Schools for 13 years. She received her BA from Illinois Wesleyan University and her Master of Science degree in painting from Illinois State University.
She enjoys being both an artist and an art teacher. Her instruction includes a lot of experimentation with materials and techniques for the younger students. Older students do more structured art activities with paint, sculpture, clay and even sewing.
Wilson’s exhibit, “Figurative Works,” includes paintings and drawings using oil paint sticks, charcoal, and graphite. Her abstract work features figures to help people relate to it better. A few recurrent images include crosses, screens, wheels, woods, and birds.
This is her first solo exhibit since graduate school. “I’ve never had the courage to put myself out there,” she said. “I’m a late bloomer.”
