Statement from Ottumwa Schools

Dear Ottumwa Families,

Our district has worked collaboratively with the Office of Civil Rights throughout the review and we have finalized a joint agreement to move forward with systemic improvements to our policies and procedures to ensure equity for all of our students.

The work ahead aligns with our current school board goal of creating a positive working and learning environment for all stakeholders through communication, transparency, and trust. Our framework for high-reliability schools and focus on school safety will ensure that all Office of Civil Rights resolutions flow seamlessly into the work we are already deeply engaged in.

We will continue to focus on equity for every student by expanding how we gather student voices, reviewing our policies and procedures, and ensuring our stakeholders know how to report issues of harassment that could occur in our schools. In the weeks to come, we will continue to review and train our staff on how to better identify issues of harassment and how to build a safe, supportive and collaborative culture.

Our district is always working to be the best. We look forward to engaging in this work for the benefit of all Ottumwa CSD children. If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with our Equity Coordinator, Maria Lantz.

Sincerely,

Michael McGrory
