Ottumwa School’s mission to Be the Best district in the state and a destination for families requires exceptional leadership which impacts student achievement, student engagement, and improved programming.
After conducting a search for the next Douma Elementary Principal, Ottumwa School District Activities Director, and Principal of the new alternative learning center, Ottumwa Schools is proud to announce the following leaders' new roles.
Mr. David Eaton will become the next Principal of Douma Elementary.
Mr. Eaton has nearly 30 years of experience in Ottumwa as an elementary teacher, Summer School Director, Instructional Technology Coach, and Curriculum Instructional Leader. His passion for building relationships with students and staff and experience as an instructional coach will serve him well in leading Douma.
“Mr. Eaton has given so much to our district and continues to be committed to our vision of excellence. We’re excited to be able to place him in a leadership role and see all he can do for our kids,” said Superintendent Mike McGrory.
It’s a Douma family homecoming for David as he was a student at Douma elementary and taught 2nd grade there for 12 years. “I’m so committed to Ottumwa Schools. I believe our Douma staff and students can achieve at high levels,” he said. “I am approachable and willing to listen, but also willing to show leadership when direction is needed that inspires others to work collaboratively on a shared vision. I want to contribute to so many positive changes that are taking place in Ottumwa to be the best district in the state.”
David’s interview team members commented, “He’s 100% in for Douma! He’s vested in all kids and is student-centered and equity-focused. He has extensive experience in our district.”
Mr. Brandon Brooks named the next Activities Director for Ottumwa Schools.
Ottumwa Schools is also excited to announce another Ottumwa Bulldog returning to make a difference in our programs. Mr. Brooks is a former Ottumwa teacher and coach from 2013-2019. His experience since then as a middle school activities director and as an award-winning collegiate coach has prepared him well for the next level of leadership.
Superintendent McGrory said, “Brandon’s high energy and character were apparent. His passion for our district and great desire to return to make a huge impact is something that we value greatly. We’re looking forward to his leadership making a difference in our athletic and activities programs.”
It was clear through the interview process that Mr. Brooks was passionate about being a Bulldog again. “He’s dynamic and student-focused,” an interview committee member noted, “He has a clear vision for Ottumwa and meeting the needs of all activities. He is passionate about being an Ottumwa Bulldog.”
Pending Board approval, Mr. Brooks will begin his duties July 1, 2022, replacing Mr. Scott Maas, who’s retiring at the end of the school year. Mr. Eaton upon Board approval will begin August 1, 2022. He will be replacing Kristi Ridgway, who will become the Horace Mann Principal.
Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, Aiddy Phomvisay, will become the Principal of the new alternative learning center.
Mr. Phomvisay has been leading district efforts in the development and planning of the new learning center.
“We’re so excited to place Aiddy’s passion for working with alternative learners and his ability in developing creative programs to take our school to a whole new level,” said Superintendent McGrory. “The students and staff of the learning center will benefit greatly from his experience.”
Phomvisay said, “When the opportunity came to lead this amazing initiative, I gladly welcomed it as I know we can make a big difference in the lives of so many of our students. The learning center is critical to the mission of serving all students and increasing student achievement. I am excited to lead a devoted group of educators in creating a caring and personalized learning environment focused on student success through multiple pathways towards graduation and beyond.”
In addition to his duties as Principal, Mr. Phomvisay will assume the responsibility of public relations, communications, and marketing.
These administrative moves will provide the district with the leadership needed to improve student achievement and to Be the Best. We encourage the community to welcome and congratulate these leaders.
