Program Offers After School Tutoring

This week, Ottumwa Schools' Diversity Advocates began an after school program for elementary Migrant students. The focus is to continue to build relationships while working on extra learning and tutoring.  "It is safe to say that the program got off to a great start with 49 students attending the first day," said Vern Reed, program director. The program meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at our new Welcome Center from 3:30 - 5 p.m.

The effort to create this opportunity involved several district programs working in tandem with the migrant team, including building principals, Durham School Services who provide yellow bus transportation, and the district's food service program. Migrant students will receive a meal each evening they attend.

Data will be used to measure program impact. "Based on the 13 hugs I got from excited young students as they boarded the bus to go home, I'm confident this time will be a great experience for each of them," said Reed. "We are excited to watch this program grow and see our students thrive in the Ottumwa School District!"
