Two OHS juniors recently signed letters to participate in the Ottumwa Registered Apprenticeship Program and will begin working at John Deere Ottumwa Works this summer.
Edgar Cruz and Brandon McKeag signed their letters in front of the Ottumwa Board of Education, a representative from John Deere, and family members during the May 24 board meeting.
In its second year, this work-based learning program provides students with the opportunity to earn while they learn. The students will earn credits, continue learning a trade, and earn a pay check. Students will work 20 hours per week towards the 2,000 hour apprenticeship program requirement.
After graduation, Cruz and McKeag will continue to work towards completing their apprenticeship. After all requirements are met, they will earn a Certificate of Completion and become a journeyworker.
According to the district, the partnership with Indian Hills Community College and John Deere are essential to providing these types of opportunities to students. As the program grows, other area businesses can participate, allowing more students to be involved.
