Recall on Verizon Hotspots

Verizon is recalling Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspot devices in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after the company was made aware that the lithium ion battery in the hotspots can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard. These hotspots are currently in use by district families for internet access.

To receive an over-the-air automatic software update, please power your Ellipsis Jetpack devices on. The update will prevent the device from charging while plugged in and powered on. This will reduce some of the risk of overheating by preventing the device from charging while it is plugged in and powered on. After the software update is applied, users should leave the device powered on while it is plugged in. When not in use, the device should be turned off and only charged until the battery is full. Once fully charged, the device should be turned off and securely stored.

To help promote the safe operation of all devices, we suggest the following best practices:

  • Use only approved charging cables, including the cable provided.
  • When not in use, power down/turn off your device.
  • Place your device on a flat, solid and sturdy surface such as a floor or table.
  • Ensure your device is not covered for proper ventilation.
  • Keep devices near room temperature when in use.
  • Do not expose the units to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
  • Do not expose the unit or its battery to water or other liquids.
  • Do not drop the units and do not insert foreign objects into the battery or unit.

All Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspot devices will need to be returned to the student's school by the last day of school, Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Contact the Technology Department at [email protected] or (641)684-6596 with questions.
