This year, Ottumwa's annual fifth grade Book Bowl had to make some adjustments due to Covid guidelines. On April 1, the district held a virtual round where eight teams representing every elementary school met via Zoom and participated in a written, timed test. This test was used to determine master quizzers and narrow the teams down to the top two scoring teams. On Tuesday, April 20 at 4 p.m., teams from Horace Mann and James will compete for the championship in the Ottumwa High School auditorium.
Master quizzers, earning 20 points in a round, from each school were: Maya Ferguson, Maya Parenza, Kate Manary, Jordin Mayson, Isaac Johnson, and Maya Joshi, Eisenhower; Joey Naumann, Harper Bradley, Finley Zuithoff, McKenna Ryan, Kenlee Crosser, and Makayla Dowd, Horace Mann; and Oscar Garcia, Abrielle Wiley, Kati Paton, Josie Salazar, and Desmond Abongwa, James. Also Kaiden Cain, Veronica Blaine, Madalynn Sertterh, and Leah Zigler, Liberty; and Nattely Andrade Mendoza, Wilson.
District media specialists created this quiz-type competition for fifth grade students in 2001 to promote reading. Schools select teams of up to six students to represent their school. Students read and study nine books with a school sponsor. During competition, students use the titles of each book to answer questions.
