Superintendent Responds to Proclamation

Superintendent Responds to Proclamation

Superintendent Mike McGrory

Message from Superintendent McGrory:

As of Friday, the Governor’s proclamation removed the indoor mask requirement in public spaces, eased gathering limits, and eliminated many COVID restrictions on businesses. The proclamation does strongly encourage Iowa businesses and organizations to take reasonable public health measures consistent with guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health.

I recognize district staff members and parents may have questions about the impact this new proclamation will have on current district practices. The purpose of this email is to assure our stakeholders that we will continue to make the safety and health of our staff and students our paramount concern. With safety in mind, Ottumwa Schools will continue to require the same safety measures which we have implemented since the beginning of the school year. This will include requiring students, staff, and visitors to wear face masks in all of our school buildings at all times as well as ensuring social distancing when possible. We will also maintain present breakfast and lunch procedures and continue with our current cleaning and sanitizing procedures.

District data indicates that our current practices and procedures have been effective in reducing the spread of COVID 19 within our schools. While the 14-day rolling average has been declining, we recognize the need to remain vigilant, especially since there are new variant strains in our state and country.

In collaboration with Wapello County Public Health, 200 staff members received their first COVID-19 vaccination on Friday. We are optimistic that we will be able to provide the first shot for the remainder of our staff within the next two weeks. If all goes as planned, staff will have both rounds completed by the end of March.

In closing, I want to thank everyone for your continued dedication during these challenging times. I’m proud to be part of a district that is always committed to doing what is best for our stakeholders. Stay warm and safe.
