Two OHS seniors have been accepted into the Ottumwa Registered Apprenticeship Program and will begin working at John Deere second semester. This is the first apprenticeship offered by Ottumwa Schools. "These students are trailblazers," said Jeff Kirby, Director of Innovative Programs for the district.

Austin Shepherd and Dawson MacQueen completed their advanced welding course, submitted an application, were interviewed, and offered an apprenticeship. This work-based learning program provides students with the opportunity to earn while they learn. The students will earn credits, continue learning a trade, and earn a pay check. Students will work 20 hours per week towards the 2,000 hour apprenticeship program requirement.

After graduation, Shepherd and MacQueen will continue to work towards completing their apprenticeship. After all requirements are met, they will earn a Certificate of Completion and become a journeyworker.

According to Kirby, the partnership with Indian Hills Community College and John Deere are essential to providing these types of opportunities to students. As the program grows, other area businesses can participate, allowing more students to be involved.

Due to Covid-19, the program timeline was adjusted this year. In the future, students will be selected for this year-long program in the spring.
