Smith Earns First at National Invention Competition

Charles Smith

This past week, nearly 500 out of 120,000 students participated in this year's 2020 U.S. National Invention Convention, which was held virtually.  Of those who participated in the competition, sixty-three students were honored with awards during the 2020 Virtual Awards Ceremony on July 2.

Charles Smith, a student at Eisenhower Elementary, took 1st place in the first grade division with his "The H.E.R.B. (Home Emergency Responder Beacon)” invention.  "The H.E.R.B. (Home Emergency Responder Beacon)" is an exterior light that can be placed on a house or mailbox that creates a beacon for emergency workers, activated by a wireless signal from a smoke detector, dispatch or Life Line.  Smith will receive a medal for winning his division.

Smith, an experienced inventor, also took first place last year in the kindergarten category with his “Benge Beacon” invention and was featured on “Good Morning America.”
