Liberty Elementary's Associate Principal, Steve Zimmerman, was named one of 17 PBIS People of the Year in Iowa recently.

Zimmerman, who has been part of Ottumwa Schools for 28 years, has served in leadership capacities at Ottumwa High School, Evans Middle School, and most recently Liberty Elementary. He has been recognized for his signitificant accomplishments in the implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

"Mr. Zimmerman’s commitment to PBIS has fostered a positive culture at Liberty Elementary for students and staff," said Natalie Ashman, a fourth grade teacher at Liberty. "We now have a solid Universal Tier and you can see it throughout our building each and everyday."

"In one year's time Mr. Zimmerman has led the Tier I PBIS team into an extremely positive implementation mode," said Dawn Sievertsen, Liberty principal. "The team is excited, the remainder of the staff have clarity about how to best support student achievement through proactive behavior expectation instruction and I see the culture of the building coming together in ways we have been missing out on.  I could not be prouder to have such an insightful partner that focuses on the right work at the right time."
